Shakespeare-Inspired City
Founded in 1924, Avondale Estates was built and designed specifically to
resemble Stratford-upon-Avon, England, the birthplace of William
Shakespeare. The city consists mainly of Tudor style architecture, both
the city center as well as many of the surrounding homes. George
Francis Willis, Avondale Estates founder, also built residents amenities
such as a lake, tennis courts, clubhouse, parks, and a swimming pool.
The area is known as the only documented example of a planned city in
the Southeast.
Today, Avondale Estates is home to a variety of
businesses including antique stores, restaurants, galleries, and
studios. Little Tree Art Studios is located on Franklin Street, and the
first Waffle House, now a museum, is in Avondale Estates as well.
